It is a common practice that large companies in fright of competition buy out their competitors. A recent example is Kraft takeover of Cadbury. After the acquisition, the company either keeps the same logo design or alters it to their desires. While surfing on Google one day, a thought came to my mind… how would it end up if Google buys some of the top companies and alter their logo design?

Google, as we all know, is definitely the biggest search engine on the web. Google has always followed a similar pattern of colors (red, blue green and yellow) in logo designing for its ventures like Google Chrome and Google Buzz. I wonder what would happen if Google started acquiring famous corporations like Yahoo and Coca Cola? How would it stamp these logo designs with its powerful identity? This gave me a thought…why not try it myself!

Witness the transformation of 10 of the most well-known brands “Google style”.

No matter how experienced you are as a logo designer, clients are always difficult to handle. That is why a logo designer should be versatile enough to deal with different types of clients. Only in exceptional cases will you come across clients who are cooperative and considerate with you. Otherwise, there is a wide array of clients will come up to you and confuse your brains out with silly accusations. Over the recent years, I’ve come across countless claims and blames from my clients. Today I have listed a few of them and would like to know how you handle such allegations.
The claims and blames:

“I want my logo design to be fancy, top-notch and detailed, but my budget is…”

“Hey I saw this logo and want you to make me an identical logo design”

“I’ll pay you only when I see my logo design ready.”

“Hey I forgot to tell you, I also need a tagline to go with the logo.”

“Can you make a sample logo design for me first?”

“Why do I get the feeling this logo design isn’t original?”

“You call this a corporate logo? My child can make a better logo design than you.”

“Change of plans, I need the logo designed by tomorrow.”

“This logo is so small; I want a redesigned logo that is bigger.”

“I think you should abandon the work, I’ll make the logo design myself.”

I am sure; being a logo designer you must have encountered at least one of these statements. But only few of us are able to fight back and strictly justify our designs. I would like you guys to come forward and share your bold replies to these client statements?

Plagiarism has become a widespread problem. People often plagiarize stuff that is easily and readily available. Be it the education field or the corporate world, the curse of plagiarism is prevalent. The same nuisance is existent the logo design industry. You will witness hundreds of logo designs that either resemble other logos or are a downright copy. But I wonder the reason behind it…is it done intentionally or it’s a coincidence? Irrespective of how you come up with a logo design, you have to make sure it does not inadvertently fall into the parameters of logo theft.

The risks of plagiarism in logo designs:

Logo plagiarism is an ever increasing nuisance for logo designers, especially with the advent of the internet. With a simple click or just a little search on Google, anyone in the world can copy your corporate logos. In fact, Google itself has not been spared of this unethical practice. Google has recently warned a Chinese search engine to change its logo design as it is a clear copy of world famous Google logo.

Original VS Inspired logo design:

There is a vast difference in creating an original logo design and a logo design inspired from another. Originality is something that many logo designers claim but getting inspired from a logo design, making slight modifications to it and then claiming it to be new and unique is not called “originality”.

However, many designers have been defending themselves saying “creative minds think alike” and I think they are not completely wrong. What happens is that a logo designer observes so many logos in his life. Intentionally or unconsciously, he follows those logo design ideas when designing for a client.
Therefore, you take a look at some of the most identical logo designs below and decide which of these seems to be a “copy or coincidence?”

The EU Agriculture Commissioner Mariann Fischer Boel said,
"I’m delighted that we now have a fresh EU organic food logo design. This exercise has raised the profile of organic food and we now have a logo which everyone will be able to identify with. It’s a nice elegant logo design and I look forward to buying products carrying this logo."

New EU Organic Logo Design:

The logo design was selected from 3,500 submissions by EU arts and design students to a European Commission design competition. The”Euro-leaf” logo, as it is known, was designed by Dusan Milenkovic, a German student whose entry was adjudged the best. He won with a whopping margin of 63% votes out of 130,000 online voters. The new “Euro-leaf” logo design encompasses the EU stars forming a leaf shape, with a green background.

EU gets the new logo from an Online Logo Design Contest:

This online design contest was held on a website www.ec.europa.eu/organic-logo with the top three logos displayed for online voting. The top three position holders have won €6,000, €3,500 and €2,500 respectively as prize money from the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Agriculture and Rural Development which they will receive at an award ceremonial to be held in Brussels in July.

This latest corporate logo will be obligatory for all pre-packaged organic products made in all the 27 EU Member States, as of 1st July 2010. However, this exercise will be optional for products that are imported. Private, regional or national logos will also be permitted to be displayed with the EU organic logo. This mandatory move is contrary to the present EU organic logo which was used only voluntarily.
