Redesigned Logos of Europe – For good or worse?

Jan 28, 2010 | Categories: Company Logos, Logo Design, Redesigned Logos | Written By: Sam Anderson

Let us suppose one day you decide to change your own name… what would it be? Do you think your new name would boost your reputation among friends and family? Or do you fear you won’t be recognized any longer?

Similarly, coming to the logo design world, the strength of a company logo lies in its ability to be remembered by a customer. Mostly customers remember a brand due to its visual presence, not the taglines and services. This makes a logo design the biggest reason behind a company’s success or failure.

Some logos become an instant hit and within days mesmerize the customers. While for many, it may take many years to get its logo accustomed with its customers. Even a slight modification in logo design can create an enormous impact on brand equity. People who recall your products or services through a particular logo may not recall them via a new logo. But at the same time, a flawless redesigned logo can amazingly please your potential customers.

The Positive Aspects:

  • Logo redesign helps improving an outdated logo design for a fresh look of your business.
  • Helps in bolstering and brushing up the brand image tarnished by previous logo design.
  • Logo Redesign increases customer awareness of new services you offer.
  • New logo redesign signifies that your business is dynamic and ever updating.
  • A variety of new customers get attracted to your business.

The Negative Aspects:

  • Logo Redesign incurs considerable amount of cost
  • New logo design is extremely difficult to relate it with your organization
  • It may take a long time to get your new logo design familiarized in the market.
  • With the new logo design, customers may not recall your brand anymore
  • Excessive logo redesign may cause damage to you company integrity and goodwill.

Therefore, today I have specifically picked some redesigned logos of famous European brands and want you to judge which of these logo designs had a positive or negative impact on the brand??? Do also tell which brands should immediately consider a logo redesign to refresh their corporate identity? You be the judge!!! :)

Thanks for the article – interesting, the Excel Airways is probably the strangest of the ones you have displayed. I can see why they wanted to change their logo but the new logo is too much of a ‘trend’ logo for this type of business. I can see they’ll have to change it again before too long, it can’t be very versatile as it currently stands.

My favourite of these new logos has to be the BP logo. It’s (now) instantly recognisable and works well.

As for Doctor Who – I didn’t even know they had changed it and I watch the show so it didn’t make an impact.
