There has always been endless argument on what is more essential in making a successful logo designer…natural talent or academic qualifications? Some spheres within the design community consider design degree to be prime success factor of a logo designer. While others deem that designing is an art that cannot be learnt rather it is inborn.

Human beings, by birth, are born with a clean slate. They have the ability to learn and develop their skills about anything that they determine to do. I believe that a logo designer is shaped through a blend of both the above mentioned attributes i.e. natural talent and academic degree. With the right amount of determination for the field and adequate knowledge about the tools of the trade, anyone can become a designer.

To quote Calvin Coolidge:

“Nothing in this world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful people with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent.”

In order to substantiate by point, let us analyze the importance of each factor in becoming a successful logo designer.

Natural Skills & Inborn Talent:

• Natural ability alone is insufficient in understanding the concepts of logo design.
• However, a person who is born with an artistic mind will find it easier to develop their creative skills.
• If you are born with a creative flair, you will be relatively more motivated in becoming a logo designer.
• Being innately skillful can sometimes lead to overconfidence. People with natural talent sometimes disregard knowledge and consider learning to be a futile practice.

Design Degree & Knowledge:

• By acquiring academic learning of design field, you can accurately guide your natural abilities.
• Degree alone cannot help in becoming a successful logo designer if you lack the passion and talent for it.
• Possessing a design degree gives a favorable impression in front your clients.
• Incorporating your academic qualifications in your logo designer resumes is a statutory requirement for most job openings.

In conclusion, I would like to ask my fellow designer friends as to what is your perspective on this subject? Do you consider that yourself as naturally talented or has design degree influenced in making you a successful designer?
