It is said that behind every famous logo, there is a famous logo designer. However, the infamous London 2012 Olympic logo shows that even famous designers can be responsible of creating bad logos. London 2012 Olympic Logo, that turned out to be a laughing stock in the UK community was originally designed by a renowned brand consultancy, Wolff Olins. Although, the event is yet to be taken place, its branding and identity development efforts were completed back in 2006.

Thus far, the logo has come across three different logo design controversies, the latest one being the resemblance to the Nazi Symbol. Considering that the price of this famous logo was £400,000, it hasn’t received a favorable response from the UK market. To begin with, let me run through all the previous issues surrounding this UK based identity.

London 2012 Olympics Logo – Previous Controversies:

Zion

Since its inception it has constantly encountered numerous controversies. I also wrote a post on London 2012 Olympics Logo’s controversy involving Iran, which alleged that the logo spelt out the word ‘Zion’. Prior to that, the logo was compared to an explicit scene. The brand identity was declared a vulgar reference to an objectionable pose and was mocked at for years.

London 2012 Olympics Logo – The Nazi Symbol:

Nazi

Another controversy that haunts this infamous logo is that some people allege it was derived from the Nazi symbol. The Swastika Sign was prominently used by the Nazi Dictator, Adolf Hitler, to represent his Nazi Party in Germany. Although International Olympic Committee refuted the claims as false and had this to say:

"Our response is as follows: The London 2012 logo represents the figure 2012, nothing else,"

I always thought that the logo design plainly spelt out the numerals 2012, referring to the year in which the event is to be taken place. But after having witnessed so many controversies and resemblances to this identity, I ask my fellow readers as to what do they think about the Nazi reference.

In the end, I would like to draw your attention to a poll underway at SodaHead, asking the question “Is the London Olympic Logo Racist?” I would encourage all my readers to cast in their votes to voice their opinions on the issue.

It is ugly, but it is 2012. It can’t spell ZION and NAZI…you can’t be pro-nazi and pro-zion. Plus those words are share 3 letters. So its just people looking to stir stuff up where there isn’t a story.

  2. Joanne Says:

I am not impressed with this symbol in any way. The symbol does not appear as those in the past 64 years to promote unity.

The world chapters my have their individual battles. The olympic tems and personal, only promote sport compition, and county pride.

This is ridiculous . When you have to diagnos after a glimpse it’s not a symbol for the Olympics. The symbols and colors have always been positive, creative and straight forward at sight. Whomever contracted this designer should be held accountable for their judgement and waste of money.

  3. Theodore Nikolopoulos Says:

Just as with the 2004 Athens Olympics, these logos seem to be pushing the envelope on the stupidity of modern art afflicting the cultures of many countries.
