A Logo Design Contest revamps EU Organic Logo

The European Union (EU) has decided to stamp all the organic products with a new “green” logo design. European shoppers all across will witness a “green leaf” logo on pre-packed organic products from 1st July 2010. This new logo design will reassure European consumers that the organic products are authentic and of a quality which is standardized all over EU.

Existing Logo Winning Logo

The EU Agriculture Commissioner Mariann Fischer Boel said,
"I’m delighted that we now have a fresh EU organic food logo design. This exercise has raised the profile of organic food and we now have a logo which everyone will be able to identify with. It’s a nice elegant logo design and I look forward to buying products carrying this logo."

New EU Organic Logo Design:

The logo design was selected from 3,500 submissions by EU arts and design students to a European Commission design competition. The”Euro-leaf” logo, as it is known, was designed by Dusan Milenkovic, a German student whose entry was adjudged the best. He won with a whopping margin of 63% votes out of 130,000 online voters. The new “Euro-leaf” logo design encompasses the EU stars forming a leaf shape, with a green background.

EU gets the new logo from an Online Logo Design Contest:

This online design contest was held on a website www.ec.europa.eu/organic-logo with the top three logos displayed for online voting. The top three position holders have won €6,000, €3,500 and €2,500 respectively as prize money from the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Agriculture and Rural Development which they will receive at an award ceremonial to be held in Brussels in July.

This latest corporate logo will be obligatory for all pre-packaged organic products made in all the 27 EU Member States, as of 1st July 2010. However, this exercise will be optional for products that are imported. Private, regional or national logos will also be permitted to be displayed with the EU organic logo. This mandatory move is contrary to the present EU organic logo which was used only voluntarily.

Time to think:

Considering such a big corporate logo design being discovered through a logo design contest, do you still think there is any harm in trying these contests?

I quite like it as I think it would have been quite difficult to alter the shape of each star to achieve the leaf shape proportions. The only thing I would say though is that a logo based on corn crops says farming to me but a leaf says more environment / eco. I do still like the new logo though.
