UK Greenpeace launches logo design contest – “BP’s obsession with dirty oil”

It seems like the gloves are off against BP as Greenpeace launches a challenging logo design contest to depict the real image of the oil company. This innovative and confrontational campaign is a series of demonstrations being held by Greenpeace against the massive oil spill by BP in the Gulf of Mexico. While many companies are cleaning up their act with McDonald’s going green, the pressure is on BP to act fast to salvage its corporate identity.

 
 

› Greenpeace calls for logo design experts:

Just days ago, trained activists of Greenpeace climbed a balcony above the front entrance to BPs London headquarters to suspend a giant flag bearing a specially designed, oil soaked BP logo. After this effort, Greenpeace has turned its interest towards the logo design industry for assistance. The contest began on 21st May 2010 and will run for six weeks, ending on 28th June 2010. Designers, industry experts and the general masses are invited to enter the competition to make a clever and creative logo design that fittingly reflects BP’s actions. They have also set up a Facebook page that discusses the motive behind this campaign.

 

› The glorified BP logo ridiculed:

The present BP logo, made by famous logo designer Landor, featuring a green and yellow Helios design, which has been appreciated for years was explained this way by John Sauven, Executive Director of Greenpeace UK:

“BP’s famous green logo is there to distract us from what this company really stands for. This company has chosen to extract the last drops of oil from deep sea wells and the tar sands of Canada, instead of developing the clean technologies that can actually help beat climate change. That’s why we’re calling in the experts. We’re hoping that the design community and the public will help us come up with a logo that will actually reflect BP’s obsession with dirty oil. This is a competition with a difference, because we’re planning to use the winning entry all over Britain in a high profile Greenpeace campaign that the company will find impossible to spin.”
 

› The winner gets…

The winning logo will feature throughout the campaign and Greenpeace says it will be used in several high profile and iconic locations as well as a further national newspaper advertisement. Other prizes include a day of training on a Greenpeace speedboat, a design master class with top agency Airside, or one of 50 specially designed Greenpeace goody bags.  Three categories will be considered “professional designer”, “general public” and “under 16”. The winner will be judged by a panel of experts from the design and marketing community whose identities will be revealed as the closing date approaches.
 

› Companies opting more for logo design contests:

Considering more and more companies preferring for logo design contests, do you think this growing trend is going to benefit the corporations more? Greenpeace has joined the league of companies employing logo design contests, just as the EU organic logo was rebranded.

    Seriously, its not just about BP…. every Oil company has always been a pain in the neck. All they run after is profits and nothing more. I guess that is what you get for being so ignorant of the society.

    Oh my goodness…this BP logo redesign is sure getting popular worldwide. There are equal resentments on the company here in Netherlands as well.

    But i fail to understand what will happen if the BP logo does get redesigned…it won’t change the company’s evil preferences of making profits
