10 Annoying Remarks for Logo Designers – The blame game!!

No matter how experienced you are as a logo designer, clients are always difficult to handle. That is why a logo designer should be versatile enough to deal with different types of clients. Only in exceptional cases will you come across clients who are cooperative and considerate with you. Otherwise, there is a wide array of clients will come up to you and confuse your brains out with silly accusations. Over the recent years, I’ve come across countless claims and blames from my clients. Today I have listed a few of them and would like to know how you handle such allegations.
The claims and blames:

  1. “I want my logo design to be fancy, top-notch and detailed, but my budget is…”
  2. “Hey I saw this logo and want you to make me an identical logo design
  3. “I’ll pay you only when I see my logo design ready.”
  4. “Hey I forgot to tell you, I also need a tagline to go with the logo.”
  5. “Can you make a sample logo design for me first?”
  6. “Why do I get the feeling this logo design isn’t original?”
  7. “You call this a corporate logo? My child can make a better logo design than you.”
  8. “Change of plans, I need the logo designed by tomorrow.”
  9. “This logo is so small; I want a redesigned logo that is bigger.”
  10.  “I think you should abandon the work, I’ll make the logo design myself.”

I am sure; being a logo designer you must have encountered at least one of these statements. But only few of us are able to fight back and strictly justify our designs. I would like you guys to come forward and share your bold replies to these client statements?

A critical question:

Irrespective of logo design world, it’s always believed that clients are “always right” and they are meant to be handled with care Do you think it’s correct to silently accept all the rude allegations of our clients and keep following their impractical instructions so that we don’t lose them?

Touché! This seems to be an universal situation :D You wouldn’t expect such statements from professional marketing managers or such, but reality is too often as described here. Oh well…

    Or how about;
I am I not that creative but… here is what I think you should do…

Or thanks for all your hard work But I think we need to put this project on hold, we’ll get back to you soon.

Or you ask for inspiration fro what they like the project starts goes two rounds of revisions and they are still showing you stuff they like that has nothing to do with the previous direction.

I love the idea of collecting these outrageous client responses as a way to develop my since of humor, I do believe more time is spent in selling the good design compromising with the client and aiming to be provide good customer service rather than making stuff look good.

    Thanks and Regards

Just 10 of the many reasons I decided to leave the field after nearly 30 years and move on to another industry. Can’t take the nonsense anymore!

Yeah the sample logo request is the one that gets me. I mean I would not go in to a restaurant and say I would like to sample your food before ordering! It’s just not right. Thanks for sharing this as it made me smile :)

  5. Elena Says:

Yeah, I’ve had quite a few responses, that I really didn’t know what to do about:

Client: “Don’t mean to offend you, but what you sent me was just horrible.”
Me: “Ok, what don’t you like about it?”
Client: “Everything, it’s all just horrible.”
Me: “Well, I need some kind of constructive feedback so I can move on in the right direction. What are you looking for?”
Client: “I don’t know, but I will know it when I see it.”

    Or here’s another one:
“We absolutely love your work, you are perfect for us, but we need 70% reduction in price”

I just try to stay calm in these situations and not let them get the best of me… Although it is very hard lol. And lately I actually started to notice that clients get a bit more respectful when you do speak up your mind, and remind them that you are the expert and that’s why they hired you. And you do have to educate every single client, no matter how repetitive it gets.
