In commemoration to the FIFA World Cup 2010, that recently ended, I present a personal evaluation on all the FIFA World Cup logo design. First of all, congratulations to Spain, who finally broke the curse and won the cup for the first time. Throughout the tournament we witnessed many brands celebrating the World Cup Fever, which has slowly but gradually passed away.
In all, 20 World Cups logos have been designed, including the upcoming Brazil 2014 World Cup logo. The FIFA 2010 logo has been one of the most talked about logos of 2010. On a personal assessment, I have categorized the 10 best and 10 worst FIFA logos up till now. Please note that this is a personal opinion and the actual reactions may vary. |

hmm… I don’t agree with your choices. Some of the “worst” examples aren’t really logos, and the 1934, 1938, 1950 and 1954 posters are quite lovely examples from each era. The 1970 Mexico is simple and effective. As for the “best” ones, the 2006 Germany logo is a mess, and the 2002 Korea/Japan logo is too pretty and too passive to inspire many soccer fans. I’d vote for 1990 Italy and 1994 USA as the best of that lot.
It’s very hard judging such things outside of their cultural and historical context, and it is inevitable people will disagree about which are the best! Thanks for putting the collection together; I enjoyed seeing some of those old ones.

I think you’re leaving many important aspects outside of your criteria here.
First of all, many of the early “logos” that you show are the official Posters for the world cups, and not the logos (you should check the posters of the latest world cups too)
Second, best or worst according to what ? what might be “cool” or suitable to today´s design standards was very different in 1930! previous to any design schools.
Of course. Its your personal apreciation, and I respect it… a matter of taste… but I’d rather wear a T-shirt with Mexico 70′ or germany 74′ logo than any of the ones you list as BEST logos.

Several of the worst logos are incorrect. Those are indeed the Posters. Some references http://www.logodesignlove.com/fifa-world-cup-logo-designs and http://manequim.abril.com.br/blogs/mesa-de-luz/design/logo-da-copa-de-2014/ witch don’t make them less ugly.

@Carolyn King…I appreciate your personal opinion on the logo but as you might have read that I clearly mentioned the classification of best and worst was my own personal opinion.
@Orlando…As you might have contemplated that there was no proper concept of logo designs or brand identities. And to clear the concepts, the ‘posters’ you say include what were supposed to be the identities in those times. Anyhow, I appreciate you sharing your side of the story and good luck with your t-shirt fantasy.
@Nivas Gallo…you might want to check the references you cited as they are clearly mentioned as a “logo design” and not a “poster”

When you’re comparing logos during a 70-year span, “best” is at best a shaky, relative term, and at worst completely irrelevant. I mean, I could come up with my “best and worst cars” list and call a car from 1920 the worst and a car from 2010 the best, but that would completely ignore the historical context, popular thought and design patterns of the day, etc.

So the worst are all old, the best are all new. Ever heard about fashion?
You can not just tear a logo from its temporal and cultural context and then say “that is stupid” just because you belong to just one other time context and belive just of that fact into a different aesthetic.

Chico Xavier is the 3rd best logo?
Ridiculous!
July 15th, 2010 at 9:53 am
I couldn’t disagree with you more Sam. You have chosen the more modern plain and simple vector style logos, some of which are plain boring.
Germany 06 is plain awful, Argentina 78 isn’t clear enough as to what the lines represent and USA 94 is unimaginative and obvious.
France 38 and Mexico 70 are beautiful logos, just because they don’t have their nations flag / colours as a main design element, does not mean they are any less effective as some of the logos you have placed in the best category.
I think my favourite by far is the 2014 Brazil logo though, very cool.

I must agree with the last comments, I’m not really sure if the “worst logos” have been chosen under an understanding of what was going on in design at that time. Don’t you find it a bit odd that the logos you like are the newest ones?
Besides, I think you should have cut out the logos, this way avoiding the confusion between logos and posters.
July 15th, 2010 at 10:00 am
“Worst Logos” 1-8 are posters which feature the logos but the logos are too small to see in those cases. On Wikipedia you can see the logo for each WC before 1974 isolated from the posters.
I would suggest providing the pros and cons for each logo so it’s clearer why they’ve been ranked this way. This is the only way to make personal opinions worthwhile.
As I see it pretty much all of these logos are terrible and I don’t rate any of them unlike a few of the Olympic ones (tho these are mostly bad too). The WC14 logo is a step in the right direction tho. Relatively simple e.g. (not too many colours/tones), recognisable (the shape of the trophy) and functional (doesn’t try to do too much).

I don’t agree with your choice at all.
July 15th, 2010 at 11:16 am
worst logo 9 is the most beautifull for me.
Question : why the korean logo from 2002 appear in the actual 2010 ?
July 15th, 2010 at 11:37 am
I too like the “Korea Japan 2002″ world cup logo.

Judging visual identities from 50, 60, 70 years ago is non-sense. The trends, artistic influences were completely different, so what’s the parameter?
Regarding the logo for 2014 is by far the most horrendous piece of design I’ve seen in a long time. The lines look amateurish. If the idea was to give some “natural” or “organic” feel, they failed miserably. Seeing it with flat colors is even worse than the version with highlights and shades. And before you ask, I’m a Brazilian and I’m just ashamed of this logo, like the vast majority of designers/arts related professionals here in Brazil.

I think the Italia 90 logo was horrible – it’s definitely not easy on the eyes!

I totaly agree with Orlando…
